Soccer is one of the most popular team sports in the United States, and offers an excellent form of exercise to children and adults alike. Unfortunately, the nature of the sport, the repeated movement and the chance of collision, add up to quite a few opportunities for injury.
Lower and upper extremity injuries, overuse injuries, and head, neck, and face injuries are commonplace. According to Stanford Children’s Health, “88,000 children 8-14 were treated in an emergency room for soccer-related injuries.”
Soccer players who take certain precautionary measures decrease their chances of injury. Let’s look at three ways you can avoid injury as a soccer player:
#1: Use proper equipment
Donning proper fitting cleats, uniforms, and shin guards decrease the risk of being hurt in the first place. Make adjustments often, especially if the player is growing rapidly or fluctuates in weight.
#2: Get checked out by a chiropractor pre-season

Experts also say yoga is a great way to relieve daily stress and anxiety and stave off depression. We can relieve stress when “we learn ways to not only cope with the stress, but [instead] change our attitude toward it and make changes to keep it at bay. Many find that a regular yoga practice can be of benefit in the process,” according to an article about yoga as a stress reliever on the ACA website.
In the same article, ACA recommends that when seeking and selecting a yoga teacher or class you make sure it matches your personality and approach to handling stress. Among the types of yoga the article suggests include yin yoga (focuses on holding poses for a longer period of time); restorative yoga (typically uses props to ensure comfort, relaxation and release); and yang yoga (moves more quickly through poses and is better as a release for excess energy).
No matter what type of yoga you choose, it will surely benefit you and bolster the efforts of your chiropractor so you can get the most out of your visits and heal faster. However, always check with your doctor first to make sure it’s safe for you. More specifically, a chiropractor can advise you what yoga stretches will best pair with the chiropractic care you receive from him or her.
Recent research has found that chiropractic adjustment to the atlas vertebra in the spine can help lower high blood pressure. Chiropractors across the country have known for years and years that chiropractic care can reduce hypertension. The correction to the atlas vertebra or C1 is at the very base of the skull. According to the researchers this very specific adjustment to the C1 is extremely specialized to the chiropractic profession. The National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association takes credit for the technique used in this particular research project. The good news here is that virtually all chiropractors are very well trained to correct atlas/C1 misalignments.
The chiropractic procedure was as effective as two of the most popular blood pressure medications currently being used. Eight weeks after being treated with C1 correction the patients with early stage high blood pressure (above 139/89) has significantly lower blood pressure that the other control group. Those patients who were adjusted saw an average drop of at least 14 mmhg points in the systolic blood pressure (top number) and 8 mmhg drop in the diastolic pressure (bottom number). The patients in this particular study were taking no blood pressure medication.
High blood pressure has been associated with several known factors such as smoking, overweight, lack of exercise, high consumption of alcohol, stress, aging, heredity, kidney disease, adrenal and thyroid disorders. Unfortunately, there are no symptoms or signs of high blood pressure. It has been estimated that nearly one third of all people do not know they have hypertension. The only way to determine if you have high blood pressure is to have it checked. Your doctor will check your blood pressure by using a meter called a sphygmomanometer (say that fast three times), stethoscope, arm cuff, dial, pump and valve. It is a good idea to monitor your own blood pressure at home as sometimes patients are intimidated by the “white lab coat.”
Many patients with hypertension suffer from stiffness and tightness in the neck which is a determining factor in some cases for high blood pressure. This is due to the fact that at the base of the brain there are two centers that control all the muscles of the body. If the atlas or C1 vertebra gets out of alignment it can create pressure. This in turn can result in high blood pressure readings.

As students savor the last precious weeks of summer vacation, parents are out making the final run for school supplies. So, parents, take note: When back-to-school shopping this year there is one essential item that requires very special attention: your child’s backpack.
In 2013 alone, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission cited 5,415 backpack-related injuries treated at emergency rooms. In light of stats like these, doctors of chiropractic (DCs) point to the dangers of heavy backpacks, noting injuries ranging from acute back pain to chronic back pain to other types of damage.
“In my own practice, I have noticed a marked increase in the number of young children who are complaining about back, neck and shoulder pain,” says Scott Bautch, DC, of the American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) Council on Occupational Health. “The first question I ask these patients is, ‘Do you carry a backpack to school?’ Almost always, the answer is ‘yes.'”
According to Dr. Bautch, parents should limit the backpack’s weight to no more than 5 to 10 percent of the child’s body weight. A heavier backpack will cause your child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, rather than on the shoulders, by the straps.
ACA offers the following backpack safety checklist for parents ahead of back-to-school season:
•Is the backpack the correct size for your child? The backpack should never be wider or longer than your child’s torso, and the pack should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking.
•Does the backpack have two wide, padded shoulder straps? Wide, padded straps are very important. Non-padded straps are uncomfortable, and can dig into your child’s shoulders.
•Does your child use both straps? Lugging the backpack around by one strap can cause the disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, as well as low-back pain.
•Are the shoulder straps adjustable? The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body. Straps that are too loose can cause the backpack to dangle uncomfortably and cause spinal misalignment and pain.
•Does the backpack have a padded back? A padded back not only provides increased comfort, but also protects your child from being poked by sharp edges on school supplies (pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc.) inside the pack.
•Does the pack have several compartments? A backpack with individualized compartments helps position the contents most effectively. Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child’s back.
•Are all those materials really necessary? If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child’s teacher. Ask if your child could leave the heaviest books and electronic items such as iPads and laptop computers at school, and bring home only lighter hand-out materials.
Chiropractic Physicians Call for Conservative Treatments for Pain Management Amid Prescription Painkiller Epidemic
American Chiropractic Association launches 2015 public awareness campaign aimed at curbing opioid overuse and abuse
Arlington, Va.— During National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM) in October, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) will work with thousands of doctors of chiropractic (DCs), chiropractic assistants (CAs) and chiropractic doctoral students nationwide to bring attention to the public health crisis caused by pain, and in particular the overuse of prescription painkillers, with this year’s theme #PainFreeNation. The campaign is part of the profession’s ongoing efforts to educate the public about the value of exhausting conservative forms of care for both acute and chronic pain before resorting to higher risk options, such as opioids.
“Opioid medications involve the risk of overuse and addiction. Beyond the risks of overuse and addiction, prescription drugs that numb pain may convince a patient that a musculoskeletal condition is less severe than it is, or that it has healed. This misunderstanding can lead to overexertion and a delay in the healing process or even to permanent injury,” said ACA President Anthony Hamm, DC.
President Hamm noted that people in pain should be informed of all management strategies, including non-drug approaches such as chiropractic, to reduce their risk of overuse and addiction.
“Each patient is unique, and care plans should be tailored to focus on what is the safest, most effective treatment for the individual. Chiropractic physicians stand ready to work together with medical physicians to help address this epidemic that has caused unnecessary suffering, enormous loss of human potential and massive financial and personal costs,” he added.
Fortunately, health care quality organizations have begun to recognize the value of this conservative, multidisciplinary approach. Earlier this year, the Joint Commission, which certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, including every major hospital, revised its pain management standard to include chiropractic services and acupuncture. Clinical experts in pain management who provide input to the commission’s standards affirmed that treatment strategies may consider both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches.
The challenge of living with arthritis joint pain may force patients to look outside traditional medicine options to alternative treatments like chiropractic care.
But while many people may think of the chiropractor whenever they think of joint pain, The Arthritis Foundation said it’s important that arthritis patients, particularly those with rheumatoid arthritis, avoid joint manipulation while they are in the middle of an arthritis flare.
“If a patient has joints that have active swelling, I would not recommend going to a chiropractor,” Alyce Oliver, assistant professor of rheumatology at the Medical College of Georgia, told The Arthritis Foundation. “If you can’t get swelling under control, it would be dangerous to get an adjustment. If the disease is under control with medication and the patient has no cervical involvement, it could be OK to go.
Patients should consult with their rheumatologist before going to the chiropractor, she added.
Chiropractic care can be helpful for arthritis pain, as one case published on the National Institutes of Health website illustrated. In this case, an elderly woman with osteoarthritis in her hip received a 12-week round of chiropractic care. It was determined that she had an increased range of motion, better balance, and decreased disability. The study, however, did not follow up on the long-term effects of the chiropractic treatment.
The University of Maryland Medical Center reported that a review of scientific literature found that chiropractic care, in conjunction with glucosamine supplements and other exercise, can be helpful in treating osteoarthritis.
While no evidence suggests that chiropractors can stop joint damage, the treatment has been found to relax muscles, increase motion range, and improve joint coordination, among other things, the site said.
THE lumbar spine is the gateway to the lower torso. It supplies nerve roots to the legs through the sciatic nerve and is responsible for the sensory component of our hips and thighs.
